    Why go

The quiet sibling in Southeast Asia — a perfect pace reset.

    Highlights

    • Luang Prabang night markets
    • Mekong slow boat
    • Alms giving at dawn

    On the ground

City-by-city — where I stayed, what I did, and the practical bits worth knowing.

    Luang Prabang

A UNESCO-listed town where French colonial architecture meets golden Buddhist temples, and the pace is gloriously slow.

Kuang Si tuk-tuk (round trip)~150,000–200,000 LAKMount Phousi entry~20,000 LAKNight market noodle bowl~25,000–40,000 LAK
    • Do

      Alms giving at dawn

Hundreds of saffron-robed monks walk the streets at sunrise receiving sticky rice from locals. It is deeply spiritual, not a performance — watch quietly from across the street and never use flash.

    • Do

      Kuang Si Falls

Turquoise tiered pools about 30 minutes from town. Go early to beat the crowds — the water is cold, clear, and perfect for a swim. There is a bear rescue center at the entrance worth a quick stop.

    • Do

      Mount Phousi sunset

A short climb up the hill in the center of town rewards you with panoramic views over the Mekong and Khan rivers. Go about an hour before sunset to secure a spot.

    • Eat

      Luang Prabang night market

Sisavangvong Road transforms every evening into a long stretch of red lanterns, handicrafts, and incredible street food. Khao soi (hand-cut noodle soup), Lao sausage, and coconut pancakes are the standouts. Bargaining is gentle — keep it friendly.

    • Play

      Mekong slow boat

The classic two-day journey to or from the Thai border at Huay Xai. Long wooden boats, cold Beerlao, and some of the most peaceful river scenery on earth. Bring a book and snacks.

    My itinerary & photos

The full day-by-day from my trip — including where I stayed, what I'd repeat, and what I'd cut — is being written up now. Photos and notes from the road are coming with it.
